For £249, we’ll bring a wine-tasting guru, a couple of nice bottles and one of our senior marketers and designers to spend two hours with you. In that time we’ll get to know you, your business and your reporting objectives. We’ll show you examples of our work with other clients and discuss ideas we think might add value to your company.

A week later we’ll meet up with you again to give you a range of design ideas on refreshing your corporate reports. If you love the ideas and want us to progress them then we will give you your money back, if you hate the ideas then we’ll give you your money back and if you want to take the ideas and work on them yourself then that’s fine too.

So, they require vibrant, stand-out designs to reflect their diverse product offering and market reach.

Ricardo consider their report and accounts as their flagship document from which design standards are set and design cues taken for the following financial year. The challenge for us is to keep the graphic design looking cutting edge year-on-year whilst also balancing the requirement for enforcing the company branding and maintaining the key focus of their messages moving forwards.

An additional element of the brief is to ensure that 3 consecutive years of reports and accounts can be laid out side-by-side and be complimentary to one another and show a clear design progression in-line with strategy.

Ricardo as a company means lots of different things to lots different people, it operates in multiple market sectors around the world and develops cutting edge technology to reduce global CO2 emissions for anything from a motor scooter to a massive ship or power station. By developing a new front cover in the silhouette of the company logo we were able to reinforce the Ricardo brand but also to imply this breadth of capability. The design language set on the front cover flows through the document in an unobtrusive way providing consistency throughout the document.

The use of space and imagery in the document has been constructed to entice even the most casual reader into what is in essence a serious financial report. By highlighting key financial metrics the document is also able to convey the key facts at a glance whilst the in-depth financial tables are all clear and easy to understand. All in all this document is not just a pretty cover. It has a consistent graphic design DNA which clearly communicates not only the financial facts but also that Ricardo is an innovative company that gives maximum attention to detail in everything that it does.
